Former PBA scoring machine Vergel Meneses proud to see Bombers win with defense

    Sep 25, 2015

JOSE Rizal University coach Vergel Meneses easily summed up the Heavy Bombers’ woeful first half performance against University of Perpetual Help on Friday.

“Sabi ko nga, first half namin, mapapamura ka talaga,” said Meneses, who watched in horror while his Bombers allowed Perpetual to make 46 percent of its shots in the first half on the way to a 38-26 lead. “Lay-up after lay-up for Perpetual.”

The second half was an entirely different story, though.

The Heavy Bombers picked up their defense in the second half, limiting Perpetual Help to just 14 points in the third before holding the Altas without a field goal in the final seven minutes on the way to a 62-60 win.

Paolo Pontejos provided the fireworks offensively, scoring 16 of his 19 points in the third quarter to lead the Heavy Bombers to the victory  - a follow-up to their 86-80 win over Letran.

“Nakahabol kami because of our defense,” said Meneses.

The Bombers raised their record to 10-6 (win-loss) remain in the hunt for the Final Four. Even better for JRU is that it will have a light schedule for its remaining games in Lyceum and San Sebastian.

Still, Meneses said the Heavy Bombers’ play still needs improvement if they want to make it to the inal Four.

“We still need the last two games. If we will not play the way we played against Letran, not this game ha, against Letran, useless dahil nothing to lose (ang mga kalaban),” said the former PBA MVP.

“Mas masarap siguro ‘yung pinaghihirapan kaysa madali. We are destined siguro to be here na maghirap kami."
