JOSE Rizal University coach Vergel Meneses rued that failure to play defense and crucial turnovers committed cost the Heavy Bombers what he termed was a ‘perfect basketball game.’
The Bombers failed to protect a 12-point fourth-quarter lead and bowed to San Sebastian in overtime, 91-89.
JRU led, 74-68, with less than two minutes remaining, but the Heavy Bombers failed to find an answer to San Sebastian’s pressure defense and were forced into overtime.
Five players scored in double figures for JRU led by the 15 of Tey Teodoro and 14 by Paolo Pontejos.
Still, that didn’t prevent the Mandaluyong-based squad, tagged as one of the title favorites in Season 91, from falling to its second consecutive loss.
“Last minute of the game, doon pa kami nagkaroon ng maraming turnovers. They also relaxed on defense and we failed to protect the lead,” admitted Meneses.
After trailing 53-65, San Sebastian tied the game on a split by Michael Calisaan at the foul line, 74-74.
John Grospe gave JRU back the lead, but point guard Ryan Costelo scored on a scoop shot to knot the count anew at 76-all with 32 seconds left to eventually force an extra five-minute session.
Meneses however, said he was more disappointed since it would have easily been a victory for the Heavy bombers if not for the costly endgame collapse.
“It’s almost a won ball game. We were playing perfect basketball down the stretch tapos bumigay,” said Meneses.
