TOPEX Robinson is set to return as head coach of the San Sebastian Stags.
A person familiar with the negotiations said that the school's search committee has picked Robinson for a return to the Stags bench, just months after stepping down midway through the NCAA basketball wars.
Robinson got the nod of the search committee, headed by the school’s vice-president for student welfare Fr. Joel Alve, over two other candidates in Art Dela Cruz and current Cagayan Valley head coach and former Stag Alvin Pua.
Robinson, who is currently the assistant coach of the Alaska Aces in the PBA, replaces Allan Trinidad, the same person who took over after he resigned midway through last season.
Trinidad resigned after former Lubao mayor Dennis Pineda announced he was quitting as the team’s chief patron last month.
Despite guiding his team to an NCAA Finals appearance and a Philippine Collegiate Champions League crown in 2011, Robinson abruptly left the team midway through last season under mysterious circumstances.
Once the hiring becomes official, Robinson is expected to have his hands full rebuilding the team following the departure of Calvin Abueva to the pros and Ronald Pascual finishing his college career last season.
Reigning MVP Ian Sangalang along with Dexter Maiquez and Michael Miranda are also set to leave the team after Pineda’s decision to cut ties with the school at the end of a five-year partnership.
