JOSE Rizal University went wire-to-wire in beating San Beda, 97-88, in an NCAA upset on Tuesday in the NCAA Season 92 seniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Heavy Bombers gained their ninth victory in 15 games, sweeping their elimination round matches against the Red Lions, who slipped to 11-4.
San Beda’s defeat also allowed Arellano to take the top spot with an 11-3 record after its victory over Lyceum.
JRU coach Vergel Meneses was very happy with the play of the Heavy Bombers as he swept San Beda for the first time in his seven-year coaching career with the squad.
“Ngayon ko lang nakitang nagpasahan ng ganyan. Lagi kong ineemphasize na ’wag natin pahirapan ang basketball,” said Meneses as the Bombers dished out 28 assists, while the Lions made 17.
Teytey Teodoro scored a season-high 28 points and MJ Dela Virgen stepped up, scoring 15 of his 20 points in the first half to lead JRU to a 56-34 lead at the break.
Javee Mocon had 26 points and nine rebounds for the Red Lions, who struggled from the get-go. San Beda was able to cut JRU’s lead to single digit but there was not much time on the clock.
