Chance for St. Benilde Blazers to forge playoff for spot in Final Four

    Oct 8, 2014

WHETHER the Final Four scenario in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament gets complicated or not is set to be known on Wednesday in the final day of the elimination round at The Arena in San Juan.

College of St. Benilde seeks to join the semifinal picture as it tangles with also-ran Letran at 2 p.m. before Arellano aims to seal the top spot when it faces Lyceum two hours later.

The Blazers are enjoying their best season in more than a decade with 11 wins to show in 17 games and are looking to clinch their first postseason berth since 2002.

A victory over the Knights will forge a three-way tie for third place with Jose Rizal University and University of Perpetual Help.

That would necessitate a playoff between the Altas and the Blazers for the last Final Four spot with the survivor facing the semifinals-bound Heavy Bombers for the third spot.

A Benilde loss would remove the complications and complete the semifinal cast right away, with Perpetual advancing.

The Blazers extended their season by turning back depleted Mapua, 87-76, just last Monday.

“Hangga’t hindi kami pumapasok sa Final Four, we haven’t proven anything yet,” Blazers coach Gabby Velasco said.

Further complications will ensue if the Chiefs (13-4) lose to the Pirates (6-11), a scenario that will give defending champion San Beda a chance to regain the top seeding in a separate playoff.
