COLLEGE of St. Benilde snapped a three-game slide and extended San Sebastian College’s losing run to three with a 88-66 victory on Tuesday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Jonathan Grey scored 20 of his 29 points in the first half, while Pons Saavedra had 20 points, including six triples.
St. Benilde scored only its second win in seven games, while San Sebastian suffered its sixth loss in seven matches.
Grey also had eight rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks.
“Today we’re a lot different from our previous games,” said CSB coach Gabby Velasco. “Prior to this game I told them that we have to have a lot of energy and hustle.”
“We are a different Benilde team today and we shot pretty well,” he added.
CSB was leading comfortably, 81-66, in the fourth quarter at the 2:35 mark when Bradwyn Guinto and Ralph Deles almost got into a scuffle.
Deles got the defensive rebound after a Jamil Ortuoste layup miss when Bradwyn tried to snatch the ball from Deles from the back.
Deles was given a technical foul for taunting, while Guinto was slapped with an unsportsmanlike foul.
Guinto scored 16 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and had one block for San Sebastian, Ortouste scored 13 and Michael Calisaan had 10 points.
