RONNIE Magsanoc's surprise resignation has stunned people at San Beda's Mendiola campus but has somehow raised hopes over at the other side of the metropolis in Diliman, where University of the Philippines has long been waiting for a messiah to revive its long-suffering basketball program.

In the days that followed Magsanoc's announcement on Saturday that he was stepping down just two months after leading the Red Lions to an NCAA championship in his maiden season as coach, internet forums and comments pages of websites have been filled with pleas for the former UP star to coach the Maroons instead.

Well, these turned out to be false hopes.

"Nope," said a person close to Magsanoc. "Walang planong ganoon."

Magsanoc's resignation had raised speculation of a rigodon of coaches in the MVP group that would see them handling the varsity teams business tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan had either been supporting for a long time, in this case San Beda, or had vowed to support, which would be the UP Maroons.

Remember that Magsanoc is an employee of the PLDT group, being an assistant of Ryan Gregorio for Meralco's ballclub in the PBA. And so is Boyet Fernandez, who is not only an assistant at Meralco but also happens to be the coach of the MVP group's multi-titled D-League team, NLEX.

Fernandez being mentioned as Magsanoc's most likely replacement at San Beda had further fanned talk that Magsanoc, a member of the last UP Maroons team to win a UAAP championship, may have been asked by Pangilinan himself to come to the rescue of his alma mater.

Such speculations, however, were immediately nipped in the bud by a key member of the MVP group's basketball operations who also happen to be close to Magsanoc.

"Definitely, I can tell you there's so such plan," he said.

The source said Magsanoc, in stepping down from the San Beda job, will devote more time to the Meralco Bolts, a middle team in the PBA at the end of the Philippine Cup with big ambitions of joining the league's elite.

Multiple sources have also confirmed that Magsanoc never committed to San Beda for the long term, the former Red Cubs star agreeing only to help out the school as more of a 'stop-gap measure' after former coach Frankie Lim was suspended for two years.
