SHAQ Alanes canned a triple with 6.7 seconds left to lift Lyceum to a 72-69 win over College of St. Benilde on Thursday, its first win in the NCAA Season 91 seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Mer Ayaay dished the ball to an open Alanes on the left corner to give Lyceum a 70-69 lead, powering the Pirates to victory after suffering two straight losses to open the season.
Alanes hit the triple after Jonathan Grey sank a trey with 39.6 seconds to play for a 69-67 Blazers advantage.
Grey missed a lay-up in CSB’s last possession, leading to Alanes converting two free throws for the final tally.
Alanes finished with a team-high 18 points, while rookie point guard Noah Lugo had 16 points as the Pirates gave Topex Robinson his first win as Lyceum coach.
“Again, it’s really a test of our character as a team. We just never gave up. Hindi kami surprised na Benilde is going to catch-up but the guys kept on fighting,” said Robinson.
Grey had 19 points for the Blazers, who fell to 1-3.
