SAN Sebastian rolled to its third straight win with a narrow 69-67 victory over Mapua in the Season 92 NCAA men's basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre on Friday.
Ryan Costelo led the Stags with 20 points, including the game-sealing free throw with 17.6 to go.
Michael Calisaan and RK Ilagan added 15 and 12 markers, respectively, for San Sebastian, which improved to a 4-9 record.
The Stags erased a 64-59 deficit and regained the lead on Ilagan's three pointer with under a minute left, 66-64.
Allyn Bulanadi scored on a layup moments later, before Darell Menina hit a booming triple to bring the Cardinals to within one, 68-67.
In the ensuing play, Costelo made one from the foul line but an errant pass by Allwell Oraeme to CJ Isit spelled doom for Mapua.
Alvin Capobres botched a couple of free throws with 3.8 ticks to go but Costelo secured the rebound before time expired.
"They didn't give up. Gusto talaga nila manalo. The good thing about this is the character is building up. Nag-pay off na lahat ng hardwork ng mga players," said Stags coach Egay Macaraya, whose team also clawed back from 25-8 hole in the opening quarter.
Mapua was led by Allwell Oraeme's 16 points and 21 rebounds.
Menina chipped in 12, seven in the fourth period, for the Cardinals, who dropped to a 7-5 card.
