SAN Beda got its campaign on the right track, beating reigning champion San Beda, 89-85, on Saturday in the opening game of NCAA Season 92 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Javee Mocon and Davon Potts sparked the San Beda attack to lead the Red Lions to winning debut against the team they lost to in last year’s NCAA finals.
Mocon had 18 points, while Potts, San Beda’s Fil-American rookie, had 16 points for the Red Lions.
San Beda started off strong, with Mocon dropping 10 in the first half, to lead by as many as 13 points, 42-39. But Letran fought back to tie the game at 60 in the third, before Potts took over in scoring nine points in the final canto.
"We were controlling the game but we made mistakes. They took advantage of it so we have to pay for that. I’m just happy that we got the win on opening day," said San Beda coach Jamike Jarin.
Dan Sara also contributed 14 points, while Donald Tankoua added 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Red Lions.
Bong Quinto had a game-high 23 points for Letran while Rey Nambatac chipped in 18 but had to leave the game late due to cramps.
