SAN Beda outplayed Letran in critical stretches in the second and third quarters to beat its archrival, 83-71, on Friday in a hot-tempered game in the NCAA Season 92 seniors basketball tournament match at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Red Lions went on a 12-2 run in the second quarter to grab a 43-34 halftime lead. The trend continued in the following quarter, going on a 10-2 blast to take a commanding 53-34 lead.
Tension, however, arose with only seven seconds left in the fourth when Jerick Balanza was called for an unsportsmanlike foul after what appeared to be an elbow on Jomari Presbitero.
McJour Luib and Antonio Bonsubre were also later seen exchanging words during the commotion.
At the end of the match, Christian Dela Pena of Letran and Bonsubre also had a faceoff during the traditional shaking of hands before security stepped in.
Davon Potts registered 23 points for the Red Lions, while Ben Adamos, stepping up once again in lieu of injured center Donald Tankoua, had 18 points and nine rebounds including key baskets in the fourth quarter to douse Letran's repeated rallies.
Javee Mocon also had a double-double, contributing 17 points and 11 rebounds for San Beda, reclaiming first place with an 11-2 card, while sending Letran to its fifth straight defeat.
Jom Sollano had 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Knights, who failed to take control after a 13-4 lead early in the game.
Bong Quinto and Rey Nambatac had 17 and 13 points, respectively, but the two combined for 9-of-31 from the field.
