BRIGHT Akhuetie came up with the clutch hits to help Perpetual Help outlast Jose Rizal University in double overtime, 89-80, in the NCAA Season 92 seniors basketball tournament on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Akhuetie led the Altas with 28 points and 17 rebounds, but made six straight points in overtime to force a second extension where they managed to hold off a resilient Heavy Bombers squad spearheaded by TeyTey Teodoro.
Gab Dagangon contributed 16 points while Daryl Singontiko and Genmar Ilagan, two players who also stepped up big to erase a 7-point fourth quarter deficit, added 13 and 10, respectively.
With the thrilling win, Perpetual now have an 11-4 record for a share of second place with San Beda. The Altas also secured a playoff for a Final Four berth with the victory
Meanwhile, JRU fell to 9-7 despite Teodoro’s late game flurry that forced the first overtime. Teodoro, who finished with 23 points, also fouled out in the second overtime, and Perpetual took full advantage of a JRU squad without its top gun.
Mark Dela Virgen and Ervin Grospe had 13 points apiece for JRU, and Jordan Dela Paz added 11 in a losing effort.
