    SSC Stags overhaul six-point deficit late in regulation, beat JRU Bombers in overtime

    SAN Sebastian overhauled a six-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation to come away with a 91-89 overtime victory over Jose Rizal University on Monday, its first win in the NCAA Season 91 seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

    The Stags opened the extra period with a 7-0 run to take control after having to come back from a 68-74 deficit in regulation, handing Rodney Santos his first coaching victory for his alma mater.

    It was a big win for San Sebastian, which defeated one of the acknowledged title contenders this season in JRU. The Stags also trailed by as much as 12 points in the fourth period.

    The Heavy Bombers (1-2) fell to their second straight defeat.

    “I’m very proud sa mga bata. We were down pero we kept our composure,” said Santos, whose overhauled squad (1-1) lost its previous game against Mapua in overtime.

    Ryan Costelo scored 12 of his 15 points in the fourth period to lead the Stags’ comeback from a 65-53 deficit. Costelo also hit a running shot with 32 seconds to play in regulation to tie the game at 76.

    Michael Calisaan had five of his team-high 22 points in overtime while Jam Ortouste had six of his 18 points in regulation. Bradwyn Guinto had 17 points and 20 rebounds for Stags, who trailed by six with 1:49 left in the fourth.

    The Heavy Bombers could only score a field goal during that span in the final period and failed to score in the first three minutes of the extra session to trail, 76-83.

    Jordan Dela Paz hit a triple to cut San Sebastian's lead to a point, 90-89, but with only one second to play in overtime. Ortouste sank one of his two free throws to settle the final tally.
