SAN Sebastian point guard Jamil Ortouste will miss the entire preseason due to a recurring back injury.
Head coach Topex Robinson said on Monday Ortouste, one of the key players for the Stags in their Final Four run last season, suffered the injury in practice and the team has decided he should rest for the entire preseason.
“Jamil has a back injury so we decided to save him for the season rather than risk it. I’m hoping that he will be ready for the coming season,” Robinson said.
The injury will also keep Ortouste from taking part in team practice.
“We had an MRI already and the recommendation from Dr. Raul Canlas to rest him for this whole month,” said Robinson.
Ortouste averaged 14.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists for the Stags last year.
Ortouste’s absence has led to the Stags’ slow start in the Filoil preseason tournament as they hold a 2-2 card.
But Robinson remains patient with his struggling Stags, seeing the situation as an opportunity for other players to develop for Season 90.
“We might be struggling right now but we are looking at the bigger picture. We are looking at the season rather than this tournament. We want the players to get exposed, make mistakes, and learn from that,” said Robinson.
