SAN Beda completed a first-round sweep of the NCAA Season 91 juniors basketball eliminations, edging Arellano, 86-81, on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Pedro Alfaro had 23 points while Samuel Abu Hijle had 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Red Cubs scored their ninth win in as many games.
The Red Cubs finished the first half strong, taking a 39-37 lead after trailing by 11 points, 20-31, in the second period.
“Actually, nag-iisip na ako magpalit ng game plan pero binalik ko lang ’yung mga starters ko. Muntikan na kami doon. Mahirap ma-baon nang ganun kalaki,” said San Beda coach JB Sison, noting he has yet to see the Red Cubs play their best.
“Walang talo pero I know may maibibigay pa kami. Kasi katulad kanina, ang ganda ng start namin tapos pagpalit ng tao namin, na-rattle kami,” said Sison.
Arellano finished the first round in third place with a 6-3 win-loss record, tying Lyceum.
Jose Rizal University beat Perpetual Help, 89-66, in a battle of winless teams.
John Torre pumped in 39 points for the Light Bombers, who finished the first round with a 1-8 win-loss card.
The Altalettes have lost all their nine games.
