SAN Beda takes on Jose Rizal University as highlight of Thursday’s marquee doubleheader in the NCAA Season 91 seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Arellano faces Perpetual Help in the 4 p.m. second game pitting two of the league’s other title contenders.
Focus, however, will be on the 2 p.m. encounter between the defending champion Red Lions and the Heavy Bombers, who will try to step closer on league-leader and unbeaten Letran (7-0).
The Lions, reigning five-time champions, are coming off an 83-81 win over Perpetual Help to extend their winning streak to three.
The Heavy Bombers, however, are also on a three-game winning, which they capped with an 83-78 beating of Lyceum.
Defense will be the key for JRU if it is to beat San Beda. The Heavy Bombers are the league’s top defensive team by giving up just 64.33 points per ballgame.
“If we can slow them down, we'll have a chance,” JRU coach Vergel Meneses said.
Arellano and Perpetual Help, meanwhile, look to bounce back from their respective losses in their previous games.
The Chiefs saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with a 68-77 defeat loss to the Knights, while the Altas dropped their match against the Red Lions.
