ART de la Cruz and San Beda’s second stringers came up with a huge second-quarter run en route to a 108-80 victory over Emilio Aguinaldo College on Thursday in the NCAA Season 91 men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Red Lions took a 58-37 first-half lead and went on to score their second win in as many games.
Ola Adeogun and Baser Amer saw action for San Beda for the first time this season after suffering injuries while playing for Hapee in the PBA Developmental League, but the Red Lions hardly needed their two top players to put away the Generals.
De la Cruz had a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds and added four assists and two steals for the Red Lions. He scored 14 points in the first half that saw the Red Lions turn a 31-26 lead into a 21-point halftime advantage.
Second stringer Amiel Soberano also delivered for San Beda, finishing with 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting from threes. Soberano brought the Red Lions’ lead to 33 in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach.
Jeramer Cabanag and Radge Tongco combined for 20 points and five steals for the Red Lions.
“Sabi naman namin, let’s try to get better every game because the opponents will get better,” said San Beda coach Jamike Jarin.
Adeogun had 12 points in 15 minutes while Amer had three points and three assists in 12 minutes.
“One good thing is that Ola and Baser played for a few minutes. That’s a good plus for us,” said Jarin.
Francis Munsayac had 20 points while Mbang Adoumabba had 17 points and 15 rebounds for EAC as the Generals started their campaign with a loss.
