PLAYERS from San Beda and Letran are facing suspensions for their role in the near brawl during their match on Friday in the NCAA basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
NCAA commissioner Andy Jao said he will review the video of a commotion that began after Letran’s Jerick Balanza elbowed San Beda’s Jomari Presbitero during a rebound play. A separate scuffle between McJour Luib and Jun Bonsubre also occurred during the commotion.
Jao said he will meet with Management Committee chairman Jose Mari Lacson of host San Beda to decide on the matter.
“We will review the tape. If there are violations, we have to ask chairman Mari Lacson to convene maybe on Monday so that we can formulate something that is beneficial to the league,” said Jao.
“If there are suspensions to be meted out, it should be meted out,” said Jao.
Under Fiba rules, players directly involved in the commotion are not the only ones that could face sanctions. Players who left the bench during the scuffle could still face suspensions as only the coach or assistant coaches are allowed to leave the bench during a fight or a situation that may lead to a fight.
The Knights, who are on a five-game losing run, face winless College of Saint Benilde on Tuesday, while the Red Lions take on Mapua on Thursday.
A source said the raw video of the match was not readily available due to technical glitches, and a master copy of the match from ABS-CBN Sports is being sought as soon as possible.
