PAOLO Pontejos and Teytey Teodoro took command in the endgame as Jose Rizal University handed San Beda its first loss this season, 79-73, in the NCAA Season 92 seniors basketball tournament on Tuesday.

The Heavy Bombers came up with a 20-2 run to wrest the lead and the victory to raise their record to 4-5.

Pontejos scored 27 points in the match to spearhead the comeback while Teodoro made the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:48 left that gave JRU the lead for good, 74-73.

JRU coach Vergel Meneses lauded the defensive effort of his team after limiting San Beda to only seven points in the fourth.

“It means we are playing defense. Paolo and Teytey, they played together because they played defense,” said Meneses.

Teodoro had 14 points including the clutch go-ahead three, while Abdoul Poutouchi, much-maligned by Meneses this season, finished with an impressive 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Heavy Bombers, who won over San Beda for the first time since a 77-65 victory on September 27, 2014.

Donald Tankoua had a game-high 28 points and 15 rebounds, including a five-point run that put the Red Lions ahead, 71-59, before the collapse.

Pontejos converted all his eight fourth-quarter points in that critical JRU run, including a highlight lay-up where he eluded two San Beda defenders mid-air to score the basket.

Then Pontejos also found Teodoro in the left corner to knock in the go-ahead triple.

San Beda lost a lead as high as 16 points before dropping its final match of the first round against JRU.

The Red Lions fell to 8-1 in its final game in the first round.
