WITH just a few months left before NCAA Season 91, San Sebastian caretaker coach Rodney Santos has taken a more active role and started infusing his own style into the Stags system.
The former star Stag has yet to be officially named head coach, but said school officials have told him he will “most probably” be handling the squad for the NCAA tournament, replacing Topex Robinson who had moved to Lyceum.
“Sinabi nila noong January, they put me as an acting coach, and sabi nila, eventually, ikaw na ’yun,” said Santos.
The NCAA basketball tournament usually starts in June, with several important preseason events set in the weeks before that, and Santos is looking to start preparations early.
“Nung sinabi nila ’yun, pinasok ko na ’yung sistema ko sa team. March na, ewan ko kung magpapasok pa sila ng coach so sabi nila, most probably, ikaw na ’yun,” Santos said.
“Maybe, magkakaroon ng official announcement kasi expiring na kami sa March,” he added.
Santos entered the Stags coaching staff after Robinson returned to the team for a second spell as coach in 2013.
Santos played for the San Sebastian high school and college teams from 1991 to 1995, winning the Most Valuable Player award in 1994.
Six players from San Sebastian will see action in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup as the school forged a tie-up with Liver Marin, coached by Santos, for this conference.
The six are Bradwyn Guinto, Jamil Ortouste, Jerick Fabian, Michael Calisaan, Jeff Santos, and Ryan Costelo as they prepare for NCAA Season 91.
