    NU Lady Bulldogs rip FEU Lady Tams to complete first-round sweep

    NATIONAL University completed a first-round sweep and 71st win in a row in UAAP women’s basketball, demolishing Far Eastern University, 91-58, on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

    Ria Nabalan, Jack Animam and Kaye Pingol showed the way as the Lady Bulldogs swept the first seven games of Season 81 and move two wins closer to tying the UAAP’s longest winning streak record of Adamson softball team’s 73 straight victories.

    Nabalan had 18 points, five rebounds and seven assists, Animam came up with 15 points and nine boards, while Pingol added 10 markers.

    Jeanne Camelo and Mikka Cacho had nine points each and combined for five assists, while Rhena Itesi had eight points and four rebounds.

    The Lady Bulldogs, who have yet to lose since their Game Three setback to La Salle in the Season 76 finals, took a 24-6 lead after 10 minutes and extended it to 41 points, 70-29 spread with 1:54 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

    FEU’s Clare Castro was held to just seven points on 3-of-9 shooting and four rebounds.

    Valerie Mamaril scored 14 points, while Fatima Quiapo had 11 points and seven rebounds.

    Camille Taguiam added 10 points and five assists for the Lady Tams, who slid to 5-2, tied for second with idle La Salle.

    Meanwhile, Tin Capilit scored the game winner as University of Sto. Tomas beat University of the East, 53-51, to end its two-game skid and finish the first round with a 4-3 card, tied with idle Adamson at No. 4.

    The Tigresses squandered a 46-34 lead early in the payoff period as the Lady Warriors unleashed a blistering 17-5 run capped by Anne Pedregosa’s lay-up to tie the game at 51 with 57.5 seconds to go.

    Capilit had 13 points.

    Sai Larosa also scored 13 and had 14 rebounds and six assists, while Grace Irebu chipped in seven points and 13 rebounds.

    UE finished the first round with a 1-6 record.

    Anne Pedregosa had 20 points and seven rebounds, while Anna Requiron delivered 14 markers and 12 boards.
