REY Nambatac put on an MVP-like performance on Tuesday for Letran notwithstanding an ankle sprain.

Nambatac got good-natured ribbing from his teammates after putting together a double-double of 40 points and 10 rebounds as the Knights downed San Sebastian, 90-77, on Tuesday in the NCAA basketball tournament.

“Sabi nga ng mga teammates ko, sana na-injury na lang ako (palagi),” said Nambatac sustained a sprained ankle in practice but was able to recover just in time for Tuesday’s match.

The Knights gunner showed no signs of the injury against the Stags. He shot 13-of-24 from the field, made five from beyond the three-point arc, and missed only one of his 10 free throw attempts.

Nambatac was on fire from the get-go, scoring 12 points in the first quarter. After Letran took command at the half, 43-38, the former Rookie of the Year made 20 points in the second half to keep the Stags at bay.

“Sanay na kasi ako sa injury eh. Marami na akong na-encounter na injuries last year so para sa akin, normal na lang ‘yun eh,” said Nambatac.

Nambatac, however, said he made sure to stay with the system of Letran head coach Jeff Napa.

“Kaya siguro nagkabuhay uli kasi nag-stick ako sa sistema ni coach,” said Nambatac. “Although coming from an injury, naka-recover naman ako. Kahit papaano, lumaban.” (With reports from Gabriel Pe)
