SAN BEDA posted an early 22-point lead and withstood a third-quarter St. Benilde rally to win 74-56 Saturday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Red Lions took a 44-22 lead with 53 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
St. Benilde came up with 20 points in the third and trimmed the deficit to 10, 43-53, after a Rhoel Maconocido triple.
But San Beda went on a mini run, 9-3, in the final period to widen its lead to 19, 70-51, and sustained the heat until the final buzzer.
“It’s all about the boys,” said SBC coach Ronnie Magsanoc. “They were aggressive, they are hard working and they really give their best each time they’re called.”
Anjo Caram and team captain Jake Pascual led San Beda with 13 points each, while Ola Adeogun and Arthur dela Cruz added 11 and 10, respectively, as the Red Lions improved their win-loss record to 9-2.
Baser Amer has dished out 27 assists in their last two outings, 16 against Lyceum. “It’s all Baser Amer,” said Magsanoc. “His mindset is helping out but he’s ready to attack each time he is needed.”
No one scored in double digits for St. Benile, and Lius Sinco with nine points emerged as the top scorer. The Blazers absorbed their fourth straight loss in the season and now hold a 3-8 card.
