Red Cubs stand to benefit as another Alas bids Letran goodbye

    May 9, 2013

LETRAN Squires star Kenneth Alas has decided to transfer to San Beda, becoming the latest member of his family to leave the Intramuros-based school.

The NCAA juniors standout, son for former Knights coach Louie and younger brother of seniors cagers Kevin and Junjun, said San Beda’s winning tradition was a major factor in the switch, although he admitted his father’s resignation and his brothers’ exit also influenced his decision.

"Matagal ko pinag-isipan 'to (ang paglipat)," said the lanky small forward. "Mom and dad ko sinabi pag-isipan ko 'to ng mabuti. Naka affect din ang pag-alis nila kasi di na ako comfortable nang wala na si Dad.”

The 17-year-old Alas would have been an incoming high school senior, but he will have to serve a one-year residency before becoming eligible to suit up for the Red Cubs, who have 20 NCAA juniors’ titles under their belt.

"San Beda ang unang nakipag-usap sa akin na gusto nila ako kunin. And kung titignan mo ang history nila, maraming naging magagaling at successful na players at syempre sa dami ng naipanalo nila," he explained.

Alas said he has already informed Letran’s athletic director, Fr. Vic Calvo, O.P. of his decision.

"Kinausap niya ako ng one-on-one," he said. "Matagal kami nag-usap. Ang sinabi lang niya na sana maging masaya ako sa decision ko."

Despite his transfer, Alas said he will always remember his roots, having been a Letran student for 11 straight years, starting in 2002.

“Alumni ako ng Letran at proud na proud ako maging Letranite."
