UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help waxed hot on Monday, dispatching Arellano, 101-86, at The Arena in San Juan to keep in step with the leaders of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

The Altas succeeded in taking the Chiefs out of their comfort zone, slowing the game down whenever their opponents tried to run, and pushing the pace when they would play deliberate basketball.

“Yun ang sinasabi kong kontra tiyempo,” Altas coach Aric del Rosario said. “Nasira ang tempo nila.”

Not even a temporary brownout early in the fourth quarter could stop the Altas from streaking to their third straight victory and eighth overall in 12 games to tighten their grip of third spot.

The Altas also closed the gap with their victims, who instead of gaining a share of the lead with San Beda are just a game ahead in second spot with a 9-3 win-loss card.

Earl Thompson notched a second triple-double of the season with 11 points, 10 boards, and 10 assists, while Harold Arboleda and Juneric Baloria carried the brunt of the scoring load with 28 and 26 points, respectively.

Arboleda and Baloria spearheaded the Altas’ offensive onslaught, combining for eight of the team’s 12 triples, but it was Thompson who set them up and facilitated the offense.

The Altas broke the game wide open in the third quarter, where they fired a whopping 35 points to push a five-point halftime lead to 15 entering the final frame.

Nard Pinto led the Chiefs with 17 markers and seven assists, but fouled out midway through the fourth period when his squad tried to make a final push.

The Chiefs nudged to within 81-89 after two charities from Prince Caperal, but the Altas retaliated with a 10-0 blast to put the game to bed.
