OLA Adeogun played down his match-up against Bright Akhuetie as five-time defending champion San Beda takes on University of Perpetual Help System Dalta on Tuesday in the NCAA Season 91 seniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
For many years, Adeogun has been regarded as the top foreign big man in the league after leading the Red Lions to championships since first playing in the league in 2011.
That dominance, however, has come under threat from fellow Nigerian import Akhuetie, who has taken the league by storm by talling season-highs of 44 points and 24 rebounds in two separate matches for the Altas.
Adeogun said the match-up is not about bragging rights on who is the best import in the NCAA, adding he is more focused leading San Beda to a win against one of the top threats to its title reign.
San Beda and Perpetual Help are currently tied for second place on 4-1 win-loss record and a win will put the team close to idle Letran, which is undefeated after five games following a win over the Altas last week, 79-71.
“I don’t look at it as a personal competition,” Adeogun said. “Kung ano lang ‘yung mabibigay ko sa team, ‘yun ang gagawin ko.”
The Red Lions have won two straight games while playing without star point guard Baser Amer, who is out with a dislocated shoulder. San Beda is coming off a 73-67 win over St. Benilde last Thursday.
In the first game, Jose Rizal University guns for its third straight win when the Heavy Bombers face St. Benilde at 2 p.m.
JRU aims to improve on its 3-2 card following its 75-60 win over Lyceum last Friday with Tey Teodoro scoring 16 of his 25 points in the final period.
St. Benilde looks for an upset and improve on its 1-4 slate.
