SWEEPS have now become a habit for National University as for the fifth straight year, the Lady Bulldogs completed a 14-0 romp this UAAP Season 81 women's basketball tournament.
NU ransacked Far Eastern University, 68-44, on Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan to gain an outright Finals berth anew.
Reigning MVP Jack Animam ushered the domination with her 19 points, 18 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block for the Lady Bulldogs, while Rhena Itesi tallied a double-double of 14 points and 14 boards.
"I'm just happy na na-survive namin yung 14-0 ulit," said coach Patrick Aquino after his side's win no. 78. "We're just waiting for the championship kung sino man but still yung job namin is not yet done. We hope na we get the championship, that's the most important thing this season."
The win further showed how far NU is ahead of the pack, with it keeping FEU scoreless until the final three minutes of the third quarter with the game already beyond reach.
However, the immaculate run came as a surprise for Aquino, who admitted that of all the batches he has handled, it's this one where he really felt doubts.
"I was really not expecting this. Ito yung sabihin na natin na takot ako, na one of these days baka matalo," he shared. "With this batch kasi yung maturity ang doubtful ako. Wala pa akong nakikitang nagiging leader doon sa group, but eventually lumalabas isa-isa. Bawat game, iba-iba yung nagiging hero, those with scoring and those doing the job. And I'm just happy na at least from the start hanggang ngayon, nagpe-peak na. I'm just happy."
The Lady Bulldogs progressed to their sixth straight championship appearance and will try to complete the rare five-peat.
Fatima Quiapo led the Lady Tamaraws with nine points and 13 rebounds, while Valerie Mamaril had nine points and three boards.
FEU drops to 9-5 and will meet Adamson in a playoff for the second-spot on Wednesday.
