PAOLO Pontejos may have played his final season with Jose Rizal University.
A reliable source confirmed to Spin.ph that Pontejos had not been attending the practices of the Heavy Bombers and will likely not play anymore in the remaining games of the team in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
A reported fallout with coach Vergel Meneses had something to do with his non-appearance in team practices.
Meneses confirmed the 22-year old point guard did not show up for practice starting Tuesday until Friday this week.
“Hindi na nagpakita mula Tuesday hanggang kahapon (Friday),” said Meneses after the Bombers lost to Emilio Aguinaldo College Saturday, 78-69.
A team insider who refused to be named said Pontejos decided not to go back to the team.
“Hindi na raw (siya babalik) eh,” said the source.
Pontejos apparently, felt he was no longer needed by Meneses in the team after struggling in the second round.
“Feeling daw niya ayaw na sa kanya ni coach (Vergel). Nag-struggle siya kasi sa second round tapos na-injured pa siya sa paa,” said the source.
“Hindi na siya masyadong ano, 'yung parang nasa mindset ni Pao nag-iba na ('yung treatment sa kanya ni coach) compared nung dati.”
“Pero binibigyan pa rin naman siya ng kumpyansa ni coach.”
The former San Beda back-up guard, who played the entire first round, averaged 14.7 points, 2.3 assists, and 3.0 rebounds in 25.1 minutes of play.
