NCAA teams in recruitment binge as they brace for dearth in fresh graduates as K-12 system kicks in

    Jun 18, 2014
More than 30 players from all over the country showed up for tryouts for Letran's Team B as Caloy Garcia stacks up on new recruits.

WITH a drought of fresh high school graduates expected in the next two years when the K-12 education system takes full effect, Letran has started its recruitment for its men’s basketball pool ahead of time.

More than 30 players showed up for the Knights’ Team B practice on Wednesday and most of them are from high school, recently recruited from all over the country by the team’s coaching staff.

“Kinuha na namin ng maaga dahil sa K-12,” Letran coach Caloy Garcia said in a chat with Spin.ph. “Hindi na kami makaka-recruit (sa next two years ng fresh graduates).”

Collegiate leagues, including the NCAA, are expected to be affected by the new school program, which basically entails students to undergo two more years of education before going to college.

Implemented two years ago, the K-12 system takes full effect in 2016 and 2017, or a stretch of two years where there will be no fresh high school graduates, and incoming college freshmen and sophomores.

By that time, most of Letran’s key veterans, including star point guard Mark Cruz, will have played out their eligibility, forcing the coaching staff to recruit earlier to avoid a shortage of aspirants to choose from.

Aside from recruitment, eligibility rules are expected to be affected, according to NCAA Season 90 management committee chairman Paul Supan.

“May mga nakitang pwedeng maapektuhan sa current rules ngayon. At the moment, it’s the age and the playing years,” Supan said. “We’re still evaluating what are the things that will be affected once K-12 kicks in.”

Under the current rules, collegiate players can suit up for five playing years out of seven years after graduating from high school or until they’ve reached the age of 24.

“By the time mag-kick in yang K-12, ready na ang NCAA for the (change in) rules,” the Jose Rizal University representative added.

“We’re discussing it in the ManCom level then we’re going to endorse it to the policy board once we finalize the results of the study.”
