SAN Sebastian is out to prove it still has something up its sleeves even with the departure of the dreaded `Pinatubo Trio’ of Calvin Abueva, Ian Sangalang, and Ronald Pascual.
The Stags will be relying on their young guns as they aim for yet another shot at the title in Season 89 of the NCAA.
Despite losing three of the team’s main offensive options, returning coach Topex Robinson sees hope in his current batch of players.
“We know that we're less talented, we know that we lost a lot of firepower compared to last season,” said Robinson. “But I always tell them (players) that this group is special.”
Expected to fill the role left by Abueva, the former NCAA MVP who last season became the first player in Philippine basketball to lead the league in scoring, rebounds, and assists, is rookie Jaymar Perez.
A native of Bautista, Pangasinan, the 19-year-old Perez plays with limitless energy and passion just like his idol Abueva.
Jovit Dela Cruz will be the team captain of a Stags’ team composed mostly of rookie players.
But Robinson remains positive that the team can reach its goals, even with a bunch of freshmen.
“The good thing about having a young team is when you tell them to jump off a cliff they're going to jump off the cliff,” he said.
