SAN Sebastian broke its nine-game losing skid by beating Perpetual Help, 71-55, on Friday in the NCAA Season 92 seniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Alvin Capobres celebrated his 22nd birthday in a big way, scoring 13 points to lead the way as the Stags won for only the second time in 11 games this season.
The Stags also snapped the Altas’ six-game winning streak.
San Sebastian limited Perpetual Help to only single digits in the second and third periods, giving up only eight and nine points respectively, while also outrebounding the Bright Akhuetie-led Altas, 51-41.
“I think it’s all about the defense and the rebounds kaya kami nanalo,” said San Sebastian coach Egay Macaraya.
“Every game is a learning experience para sa team dahil bago ito. Hopefully, lahat ng mga players ko is maka-focus sa lahat ng game because we need to know how to win.”
Capobres, son of former MBA cager Danny Capobres, together with Allyn Bulanadi contributed from the get-go, scoring 14 of San Sebastian’s 26 points to take a six-point lead after the first period before their stingy defense took over.
Akhuetie scored 12 of his 21 points in the first period but was limited offensively the rest of the way as he also pulled down nine rebounds as the Altas stumbled to a 7-3 win-loss mark.
