Sloppy San Beda secures Final Four spot as Lyceum fails to put up a fight

    Sep 17, 2014

THE view from the top hardly seemed to satisfy San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez.

The Red Lions clinched a ninth straight Final Four berth, but Fernandez rued his team’s errors despite a 76-60 pummeling of Lyceum on Wednesday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Coming off a 73-44 rout of Letran last Saturday, the defending champions committed 14 turnovers against the Pirates, but romped to their 13th win in 15 games that solidified their hold of the top spot.

“The real San Beda team was the one against Letran, but it’s not the one who showed up against Lyceum,” Fernandez said. “We’re just lucky the Pirates played bad.”

The Pirates were actually at the mercy of the Lions’ trademark defense that limited them to just 33-percent shooting and saw themselves on the back foot all-game long.

Dexter Zamora played despite a sprained right ankle, but Lyceum’s leading scorer wound up with just six points in 19 minutes as Joseph Gabayni ended up as the only Pirate who reached double figures in scoring.

Only two Lions scored in twin digits in Art dela Cruz and Anthony Semerad, but four others scored at least seven points as the team led from the get-go.

The Lions established a cushion that grew to as many as 20 points, 57-37, after a Kyle Pascual three-point play late in the third quarter, and never let the Pirates come closer than 11 points in the the final frame.
