THE championship conquest of Letran in NCAA Season 91 is good for the league in general.

Peter Cayco, the Arellano representative to the league Management Committee (Mancom), said the Knights being crowned as the new men’s basketball champions drew a lot of interest from the fans.

The Intramuros-based school’s triumph ended San Beda College’s reign as five-time champion.

“Actually, the win by Letran was a boost for the league,” said Cayco in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum. “It’s good for the league.”

On a year when the Red Lions were eyeing a sixth straight crown, parity was established in the league as six teams were in strong contention for a Final Four berth.

Mapua suddenly enjoyed a renaissance while Jose Rizal University’s sizzling second round campaign earned the school a ticket to the semifinals.

Arellano and Perpetual Help, despite being eliminated from the Final Four, were within striking distance from earning a postseason berth.

The end was just as captivating as Letran beat San Beda in overtime, 85-82, in a classic Game Three that saw the Knights survive a great San Beda fightback in regulation play to win it all.

Cayco said the season proved any team can win in the country's oldest collegiate league.

“The season was so unpredictable and it proved that anybody can win in the NCAA. Letran proved to be the hungrier team,” he said.

The Arellano official said Letran’s success will only spice things up next year when San Beda tries to bounce back from its heartbreaking defeat as host of Season 92.

“It’s a good preparation for next season. Ironically, San Beda will be host. It’s perfect timing,” said Cayco.

The league is also satisfied with the television coverage made by ABS-CBN, which is in the first of a 10-year deal as returning broadcast partner of the league.
