NATIONAL University denied San Beda a chance to defend the Seaoil-National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) title when the Bullpups prevented the Red Cubs from reaching the Metro Manila Basketball League (MMBL) semifinals last week.
UAAP titlist National University won, 81-70, over San Beda and the Red Cubs bowed out of contention in the playoff race after finishing with a 2-3 win-loss slate.
It will be the first time San Beda won’t make it to the MMBL semifinals since the league’s inception in 1983.
San Beda’s loss to NU was also Arvin Tolentino final game in a Red Cub uniform before moving to Ateneo in college.
The MMBL is a qualifier for the Seaoil-NBTC National Championship where high school teams from all over the country see action. San Beda beat Hope Christian School for last year's title.
Seaoil-MMBL commissioner Ato Badolato said the Red Cubs’ absence means the quality of competition is improving.
“You cannot stay on top forever,” said Badolato, a former head coach of the Red Cubs. “Teams are much better. It’s also good for the league that other schools are stepping up.”
