    Monserat sparks timely Bombers surge

    Aug 27, 2012
Mapua's Jumel Chien loses the ball as he is surrounded by a plethora of JRU defenders.

RALPH Monserat came up with huge baskets in the endgame to help carry Jose Rizal University over Mapua 63-60 in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament on Monday at the Arena in San Juan.

John Lopez came up with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Nate Matute had 10 points before leaving in the third quarter with an injury as JRU improved its win-loss record to 8-3.

“Monserat gave us the momentum and energy,” said JRU coach Vergel Meneses. “It was just in the last six minutes that we played defense. In the first three quarters nagagawa ng Mapua yung gusto nila mabuti na lang sa endgame andun na yung energy namin.

“Kahit wala si Nate mananalo kami because of our defense. Also Ivan stepped up nung umupo na siya (Nate).”

Mike Parala had 15 points for Mapua, which now has a 4-7 card.

It was a close game throughout, each mini rally by one team getting a quick reply from the other side. Each quarter ended with no more than a three-point gap.

After a seven-point Cardinals surge, the Heavy Bombers came up with their own seven-point explosion sparked by a Monserat basket at the 5:15 mark of the final period.

A Monserat putback and an Ivan Camsura triple put the Bombers ahead 61-60 with 2:05 left to play.

The Cardinals wasted opportunities to catch up in the endgame.
