JOSE Rizal University coach Vergel Meneses had a heated exchange of words with Perpetual Help deputy Josel Angeles shortly after the Bombers lost to the Altas, 70-78, in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament Monday night at The Arena.
The incident took place just as the coaching staff of the two teams were making their customary handshake at center court just after the match.
Cooler heads prevented the situation from getting out of control.
Witnesses to the incident said Meneses was already exchanging a handshake with Perpetual Help head coach Aric del Rosario and assistant Lester del Rosario when Angeles approached them and shortly after had some words with the JRU mentor.
“Based on what I saw, nagkakamayan na nga `yung mag-amang del Rosario at si coach Vergel, tapos ayun biglang dumating `yung isa pang coach,” recalled JRU Management Committee representative Paul Supan, referring to Angeles as the `other coach.’
But Angeles said it was Meneses who instigated the confrontation, bringing up a punching incident of which the Perpetual Help deputy said he has no knowledge of.
“Lumapit ako sa kanya (Meneses) para makipag-kamay. Eh, mainit ang ulo niya, ang dami niyang sinasabi na hindi ko maintindihan,” said Angeles, the former PBA player who had stints with San Miguel, Alaska, and Talk `N Text.
“Tungkol daw sumuntok, eh wala naman akong alam doon.”
Meneses, the one-time PBA MVP voted as one of the 25 Greatest Players of the league, kept mum about the incident when asked by Spin.ph shortly after emerging from the JRU dugout.
