LETRAN cager McJour Luib claimed San Beda’s Jun Bonsubre tried to choke him during the commotion that occurred late in their match on Friday in the NCAA Season 92 seniors basketball tournament.
The incident began with Letran’s Jerick Balanza being called for an unsportsmanlike foul for throwing an elbow to San Beda’s Jomari Presbitero on a Letran offensive play. Amid the commotion, a separate fracas occurred between Luib and Bonsubre.
Luib said he was surprised with Bonsubre’s action at the end of their heated match at the Filoil Flying V Centre, prompting him to react to defend himself.
Hindi lang ako makalapit kasi mahaba ‘yung kamay niya,” said Luib.
Luib then approached Bonsubre again at the end of the game to ask for an explanation, with the San Beda cager saying that he was only trying to step in to avoid the incident from escalating. The face off again sparked another heated exchange.
When asked about the incident, Bonsubre apologized for what happened and said he didn’t mean to hurt Luib, his former teammate in Cagayan De Oro.
“Hindi ko sinasadya kaya ako nag-sorry,” said Bonsubre.
Relating his side of the story, Bonsubre said he was also surprised that he was bumped by Luib during the commotion.
Nevertheless, Bonsubre messaged Luib on Facebook to apologize after the game. As of posting time, Bonsubre said Luib has yet to respond.
San Beda coach Jamike Jarin also apologized for the entire incident.
“We don’t want to see anything like that. We apologize if we did something that is ungentlemanly. We apologize for that. We will control our emotions and we will both be gentleman in the next competition,” said Jarin.
