MARK Brana completed a three-point play with 5.9 seconds to play to lift Mapua to a 68-67 win over Jose Rizal University on Tuesday and help extend the Cardinals’ win streak to three in the NCAA Season 91 seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Brana picked up a miss by CJ Isit before completing the three-point play. John Grospe failed to score on JRU’s final play.

The Cardinals improved to solo fifth with a 7-5 win-loss record, but coach Atoy Co was not impressed.

“Lucky shot,” said Co. “Nandoon si Brana. Luckily, Brana was under the goal, na-foul pa and he made the free throw. Lady luck is on our side.”

Allwell Oraeme had 19 points and 27 rebounds, while Brana finished with 12 points for the Cardinals, who overcame a big fourth quarter explosion from JRU’s Tey Teodoro.

Teodoro scored 16 of his 18 points in the fourth period for the Heavy Bombers.

JRU came up with 10 unanswered points for a 52-51 lead at the start of the quarter.

It was a tight affair from there as Grospe broke a 65-65 deadlock but failed to complete a three-point play with 32 seconds remaining.

Mapua avenged its 87-90 loss to JRU in the first round, when the Cardinals lost an 18-point lead in the final three minutes of the game and Teodoro hit the go-ahead lay-up in the dying seconds.
