THIS time there was no free-for-all.
Mapua defeated Emilio Aguinaldo College, 90-88, in the semifinals of the Fr. Martin Cup Division 2, marking the first meeting between the two schools since being involved recently in one of the worst brawls in NCAA men’s basketball history.
The win by the Cardinals allowed them to arrange a finals match up with Enderun College set Thursday morning at the San Beda gym.
Since players seeing action in the tournament mostly come from the schools’ Team B, none among the Cardinals and Generals were involved in that ill-fated NCAA fracas which saw John Tayongtong sucker-punched Mapua’s CJ Isit that eventually escalated into a free-for-all.
A total of 17 players were suspended in the aftermath of the scuffle. The three referees who officiated the game were likewise suspended by the league.
No untoward incident happened this time as Mapua Stephen Que scored one of two free throws before Nigerian Allwell Oraeme deflected an alley-oop attempt by the Generals in the final minute to pull off the close victory.
The Enderun Titans led by Jordan Rios Earvin Maravilla and Willy Kamguia and coached by former Far Eastern University cager Pipo Noundou, beat San Beda-A, 73-66, to make the Finals.
