FOR someone used to winning, new Mapua head coach Atoy Co believes Season 89 of the NCAA will be the most challenging in his long and colorful career in basketball.
“This time is the hardest year for me kasi I have to prove it to them (players) that I will lose with the system I like, and I will win with the system I like. And sometimes magkakamali but I will stick to it," said the former PBA star and MVP, who took over the coaching reins from Chito Victolero.
Named as one of the 25 Greatest Players in PBA history, Co is the first to admit he doesn’t expect much from his team this year, especially with the Cardinals missing out on 2011 Rookie of the Year Josan Nimes, Gab Banal, and veteran guard Andretti Stevens.
With what he believes was a half-cooked team he had during the summer, Co opted not to compete during the pre-season tournaments, and instead concentrated on playing tune-up games against other college squads.
Still, his competitive nature wouldn’t let Co settle for a finish worse than the Cardinals’ 8-10 record last year.
“I always say this, that we will play decent basketball,” said the `Fortune Cookie.’
