LYCEUM overcame a big run by San Sebastian to come away with a 71-67 win on Friday in the NCAA Season 91 seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Pirates nearly threw the game away but held the Stags scoreless in the final 4:31 of the game, scoring the game's final 12 points to wrap up just their third win in 10 outings.
The Pirates barely held their ground after the Stags came up with a 21-3 run that saw them seize a 60-67 lead.
“I guess we just didn’t give up,” said Lyceum coach Topex Robinson. “We were up at halftime but San Sebastian has a fight in them. We fought back and we gave ourselves a chance to win the game.”
Victor Nguidjol and Shaq Alanes were instrumental in the comeback, scoring six straight points in one stretch including a triple by Alanes that put the Pirates ahead for good, 68-67.
With the Pirates up, 69-67, Nguidol made a key defensive stop when he rejected Ryan Costelo’s layup in the dying seconds, gifting Robinson with first win against his former team since moving to Lyceum just before the season.
“It will never change because I’m still a Stag,” Robinson said. “Medyo nakabawi lang ngayon. I’m happy for my players.”
Nguidjol finished with 15 points and 17 rebounds for the Pirates, who also got 16 points from Mer Ayaay. Jebb Bulawan added 10 markers.
Costelo had 17 points for the Stags, who dropped to 3-8 win-loss after a slow start that left them facing a 9-22 first-quarter deficit. San Sebastian even trailed 44-57 at one point in the third quarter.
