THE wait for the next Letran Knights coach has dragged on as the school’s athletic director, Fr. Victor Calvo, O.P. believes rector and president Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O.P.has yet to make a decision on the matter.
Calvo, who is also NCAA chairman last season, has already recommended three names to the school rector but he believes a decision won't be announced until after Christmas.
“I think no major decision on Christmas,” said Calvo who joined the rest of the Letran priests in a retreat on Monday.
Calvo submitted his three top candidates to Lana on Saturday afternoon after six coaches — former Knights mentor Larry Albano, Rain or Shine assistant Caloy Garcia, former University of Santo Tomas coach Nel Parado, and current assistants Tino Pinat, Monch Gavieres, and Ronjay Enrile — interviewed for the position earlier in the day.
A decision was expected after he sent his recommendation on Saturday, but Calvo said he received no word from Lana by the day's end.
Although no names were divulged, Garcia looms as the frontrunner for the position as the former Squire has the most coaching experience and success among the candidates.
A cousin of Philippine men’s football team striker Angel Guirado, Garcia coached Welcoat/Rain or Shine in the PBA for three years before surrendering the reins to Yeng Guiao in 2010.
Whoever Lana eventually picks will succeed Louie Alas, whose resignation takes effect on December 31.
