Lions hoping homegrown juniors stars will stay put

    Feb 6, 2013

THE San Beda men’s team has no plan to obtain players from outside its own high school program, and only hopes that the strongest Cubs would remain loyal and choose to turn into full-blooded Lions.

In their bid to extend their run of three straight NCAA titles, new Red Lions coach Boyet Fernandez hopes that Cubs standouts Arvin Tolentino and Jayvee Mocon would join the seniors squad to make up for the departure of Anjo Caram, Jake Pascual, and Melo Lim.

“Sabi nga nila, a Cub will stay as a Lion. Hopefully, they will (show) their loyalty,” Fernandez said, adding that he doesn’t have the luxury of time to look for other talent since he only assumed the position vacated recently by Ronnie Magsanoc early this year.

“Hindi naman ako mag-bibid dun sa iba just for the fact that dumating lang ako ng January,” Fernandez said. “Medyo late na kami.”

Tolentino is a former member of the Philippine Youth team while Mocon was named Finals MVP when the Red Cubs defeated the San Sebastian Staglets in last season’s championship series.

“I just started January 8 but hindi naman araw-araw kami nag-papractice kasi I have to give rest to the guys. Matagal pa naman ang liga,” Fernandez said.

Even though Fernandez has already assumed the head-coaching role, assistant coach JB Sison still calls the shots for the team in the Fr. Martin Cup.

“We have to abide with the commitment kaya pinapatapos ko muna kay coach JB ’yung Fr. Martin Cup,” Fernandez said.
