A less heralded but former Letran alumnus will be the new head coach of the Knights in the NCAA.
Former Letran player Aldin Ayo is set to be named as the team’s next coach after Caloy Garcia, a source told Spin.ph on Saturday.
Ayo got the nod of the school’s search committee following the end of Caloy Garcia’s two-year stint with the Intramuros-based squad.
Currently a councilor in Sorsogon City, where he runs a basketball clinic for the youth, Ayo was a former teammate of Kerby Raymundo and Chris Calaguio who played under coach Louie Alas in the late 90s.
Ayo, who had coaching stints in youth basketball including the Jr. NBA, is actually a part of Manny Pacquiao’s coaching staff with KIA Motors in the PBA.
His coaching staff at Letran will most likely be consisted by fellow assistant coaches with the Sorento, the source added.
The hiring of Ayo officially ended Garcia’s stint with the Knights, whom he steered to a runner-up finish behind San Beda two years ago.
Garcia admitted feeling slighted by the move of the school to form a search committee that will decide the team’s new head coach for Season 90 of the league.
Ayo will come in after the Knights missed the Final Four following an even 9-9 win-loss slate in the recently concluded season.
