LETRAN athletic director Fr. Vic Calvo, O.P. has on Saturday has trimmed down the list of candidates for the next coach of the Knights men’s basketball team to three names.
The Dominican priest, who is also the NCAA chairman this season, submitted his top three choices — which he declined to name — to Rector Fr. Tamerlane Lana O.P., who is expected to make the final decision soon.
At posting time, however, Calvo said no decision has been made by the school.
Former Knights coach Larry Albano, Rain or Shine assistant coach Caloy Garcia, Nel Parado, and current assistants Tino Pinat, Monch Gavieres, and Ronjay Enrile were interviewed on Saturday morning for the position to be vacated by Louie Alas effective December 31.
“Nag recommend na and we gave three names,” Calvo said in a phone conversation.
Although no names were mentioned, Garcia appears to be the coach with the inside track on the position owing to his dynamism and glowing record as champion coach of Welcoat in the old PBL.
He also held the Rain or Shine coaching position in the PBA before giving way to Yeng Guiao, who Garcia said is one of the strongest influences on his growth as a coach.
