THE first order of business for newly appointed Letran Knights coach Caloy Garcia is to try and convince the team's star, Kevin Louie Alas, to stay on for a final year.
Just moments after signing a two-year guaranteed contract, Garcia told spin.ph he immediately called Kevin's dad, Louie Alas, who incidentally was the man he replaced at Letran.
And the former Letran coach did not hesitate to lend a hand, although he made it clear the final decision would still be up to his son.
"Sa akin gusto ko bumalik si Kevin, pero siya pa rin ang last say dyan,” said the older Alas.
Garcia now awaits the arrival of Kevin, who is on his way back from Dubai after suiting up for the Gilas Pilipinas national squad in an international tournament.
Alas averaged 20 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.26 assists, and 1.8 steals per game last season in leading the Knights to a runner-up finish behind San Beda.
"Kakausapin ko si Kevin. Sabi ni coach Louie kasi depende na sa bata yan,” said Garcia.
When reached by Spin.ph, Kevin said there indeed have been feelers from his school but admitted he's still torn between returning to Letran and focusing on his stint with the national team.
"Pwede pa naman ako ulit maglaro (sa Letran), kaso undecided pa ko,” Alas said, hinting he may be ready to make a decision after Gilas' campaign in Hong Kong next week.
