KENT Pastrana gave University of Santo Tomas something to cheer about, leading the Growling Tigresses to a thrilling 77-73 victory over Ateneo on Saturday at UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.
The pint-sized guard triggered a personal 7-2 blast to create enough breathing room for the Espana side and take hold of a 69-59 lead with 4:09 left.
Pastrana unfurled 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter, laced with eight rebounds and four steals to tow UST to its fifth straight win to rise to 8-1 in the UAAP Season 87 women’s basketball tournament and more importantly, defend its home court.
But Ateneo rallied back, cutting the lead down to three, 76-73, with 11.6 seconds left, before Eka Soriano put the game under wraps after splitting her free throws with 7.4 ticks on the clock.
Brigette Santos chimed in 15 points and five assists, Tacky Tacatac shot 4-of-8 from deep to score 12, and Karylle Sierba and Agatha Bron both had 11 in the win.
“It’s a total team effort of course. Lahat nagtrabaho, alam niyo naman ‘yung waterloo namin is si Kacey [dela Rosa] and [Sarah Makanjuola], so the girls really worked hard talaga para manalo today,” said coach Haydee Ong.
Dela Rosa’s 23-point, 18-rebound night, as well as Junize Calago’s 23 points, six rebounds, and five assists, were all for naught as the Blue Eagles dropped their third straight game to sink to 3-5.

In the second game, Adamson got back to its winning ways with a 72-49 conquest over La Salle.
Elaine Etang showed the way for the Lady Falcons with 18 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while Victoria Adeshina chimed in 16 points and eight boards to win their third in four games and stay at third place with their 6-3 slate.
La Salle, on the other hand, lost three of its last four games to slide to 2-7.
Luisa San Juan paced the Lady Archers with 11 points, two boards, and two assists in the defeat.
