Kat Tolentino, Risa Sato say now is not the time to decide on UAAP return

    Jul 25, 2020

FOR Kat Tolentino, Risa Sato and several other 'super seniors,' now is not the time to decide on their final playing year.

Tolentino, unable to finish her final season with Ateneo as the league canceled the season due to the pandemic, will have the chance to continue the Lady Eagles’ title-retention bid as she remains eligible as the league granted all the seniors with special exemption.

But for now, the Filipina-Canadian hitter is not thinking of the UAAP.

“I think playing my last year of UAAP isn't something I am focusing on since there hasn't even been any announcements as to when we can even resume volleyball training,” said Tolentino, who is still in Canada.

“I’m still adjusting to living life in the new normal and there is so much happening in the world right now that I haven't really been able to give much thought into playing one more year,” she added.

National University skipper Risa Sato also thought that her UAAP career was over after the tournament was canceled.

Although she has a chance to return, Sato is still undecided.

“Sayang po yung UAAP season 82. But wala choice. And isip ko its done naaaa. And nalaman ko na pwede pa daw ako mag laro uaap season 83," the Filipina-Japanese hitter said.

"But my decision is not final if laro pa ako or hindi na."

Jho Maraguinot said in a previous interview that it won’t be an easy decision. Lady Eagles skipper Ponggay Gaston and Jamie Lavitoria are also eligible to rejoin the Lady Eagles next season.

Far Eastern University libero Buding Duremdes is also not thinking about it yet since volleyball trainings and tournaments are still prohibited due to the current health crisis.

“As of the moment, I cannot decide whether I will play or not even though we are given a chance to play again in our fifth playing year,” Duremdes said.

FEU’s graduating middle blocker Czarina Carandang, on the other hand, is eyeing a return in Season 83.

“Masakit po kasi na hindi natuloy yung mga pinaghandaan po hindi lang po ng team namin but also yung ibang team din po,” said Carandang.

“Sa ngayon po, yung hinaharap nating pandemic, nawa’y hindi siya maging hadlang muli next season para amin.”

Men’s volleyball stars from rivals NU and FEU expressed their desire to play one more year after both squads won their first two games before the season got scrapped.

Bulldogs star libero Ricky Marcos is eager to complete his unfinished business and he is ready to fight for a spot for the next season.

“Sobrang saya and sa akin gusto ko pa,” Marcos said. “Pero wala pang maayos na usapan with coaches e. Kaya dapat prepare ka kapag dadating na yung ensayo nyo na sasabak ka ulit. Hindi lang naman UAAP pag hahandaan, pati sa national team din syempre.”

James Natividad, Edward Camposano, Banjo Mondero and John Paulo Ancheta also have their chance to continue NU’s ‘three-peat’ bid.

Tamaraws coach Rei Diaz said that all their seniors JP Bugaoan, Jude Garcia, Cris Silang, Owen Suarez and Peter Quiel expressed their commitment to play one more year.

“Base naman sa huling usap namin ng mga seniors kung mabibigyan sila ng pagkakataon lalaruin daw nila para ipagpatuloy abutin ang goal ng team,” said Diaz.

“I think the said guidelines will help our players to reset, rethink and refocus their mind. Hope ang kailangan ng lahat ngayon to all the senior players in UAAP. They have another chance to achieve greateness. Greatness never ends sabi nga ni UAAP.”
