    JRU Heavy Bombers keep Final Four hopes alive with thrilling win over Altas

    PAOLO Pontejos led a third-quarter run and Jose Rizal University's defense took care of the rest as the Bombers held off University of Perpetual Help, 62-60, on Friday in the NCAA Season 91 men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

    Pontejos scored 16 of his 19 points in the third period for the Heavy Bombers, who outscored the Altas, 29-14, during that stretch to take command after trailing by 12 points at halftime.

    On the other hand, the Bombers' defense held Perpetual without a field goal in the last seven minutes to pave the way for a 10th win in 16 matches that kept JRU in the hunt for a Final Four berth.

    Cameroonian Abdoul Poutouochi, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds, hit the basket that tied it at 60-60 before John Grospe scored the last of his 12 points to put JRU on top for good with with 2:58 left in the fourth quarter.

    Perpetual Help, which fell to 11-5, didn't score another point after Bright Akhuetie's basket put them on top, 59-56, with 7:05 left.

    JRU coach Vergel Meneses was glad his wards were able to bounce back in the second half after being down, 26-38, at halftime.

    “We were down by 12, nakahabol kami because of our defense,” said Meneses.

    Gerald Dizon had 15 points for the Altas. Scottie Thompson had 12 points and 11 rebounds but was held scoreless in the fourth period.
