FOR a change, Jose Rizal University coach Vergel Meneses faced reporters a satisfied man after the Heavy Bombers finally came up with their first win streak in NCAA Season 92.
The Heavy Bombers won their second straight game on Thursday when they defeated Mapua, 65-60, to gain a 5-5 win-loss record following what was a seesaw ride for the squad in the first round.
For the first time this season, Meneses was a happy man, glad that the Heavy Bombers finally played the way he wanted them to and do it on a consistent basis.
“Nandoon ‘yung desire nila to win, ‘yung willingness to sacrifice, willingness to share the ball. ‘Yun ‘yung hindi ko nakita nung first round. Parang (nung first round) nandoon, wala, nandoon, wala,” said Meneses.
Meneses said he prefers to look forward to the second round, rather than look back at their horrendous first round.
“Kumbaga, nightmare ‘yun. Hindi ko alam kung paano nangyari ‘yun,” said Meneses.
Meneses said he has seen that the Heavy Bombers have intensified their defense and it is not limited to Teytey Teodoro and Paolo Pontejos.
“Kapag nakita niyo na dumedepensa ‘yung dalawa (Teodoro, Pontejos), sumasabay sila kasi buti sana kung nakakashoot sila lagi,” said Meneses.
Following the win, Meneses will allow the Heavy Bombers to celebrate. But come Saturday, the Heavy Bombers will zero in on its match-up against Letran on Tuesday.
“Sabi ko nga sa kanila, kung hindi tayo manalo sa mga tumalo sa atin nung first round, isang taon ang aantayin natin. Napakatagal. Bawian na natin. Bukas celebrate tayo, but come Saturday, Letran tayo,” he said.
